Prelude from Cello Suite No. 2 in D minor, BWV 1008 Johann Sebastian Bach, arr. by Leopold Godowsky
Johann Sebastian Bach was a composer with an eye on the future. He was always including the most cutting edge repertoire, artists, and instruments in programming, and was even involved with Gottfried Siebermann’s fortepiano constructions in the mid-1730s. Recycling repertoire was standard practice for composers of the era, and Bach transcribed his own music for other instruments, including one of the complete violin sonatas for keyboard. Godowsky’s transcription of the second cello suite is a liberal adaptation and retools the original in the image of romantic pianism at its finest.Tanya Gabrielian
