The Finnish composer Einojuhani Rautavaara wrote his set of Seven Etudes in 1969. Each focuses on a single interval and he stated that his aim was to 'reintroduce a sonorous, broad piano style using the entire compass of the keyboard, presenting this wonderful instrument in its full abundance.' The first of the set, Terssit (Thirds), is a great concert opener as it lets the piano ring out its vibrant sonorities.Steven Vanhauwaert
