The E-flat Major Rondo of 1833 was written for Chopin’s gifted student, Caroline Hartmann, who came to Paris in 1833 to study with him but died an untimely death a year later. Clearly evident is her musical talent, if she played the Op. 16 Rondo with its extraordinary virtuosic demands. A contemplative opening soon leads to elaborate scale work and challenges for the left hand that refute Wagner’s criticism of Chopin as “a composer for the right hand.” A section lighter in spirit but no less technically demanding intervenes before the brilliant ending.
