Leo Delibes' interest in music came from his mother, an opera singer, and his uncle, a church organist. His early career as a singer went nowhere and he took an appointment as a church organist. With free time to experiment with music, he found his true talent in composing music mainly for theatre, including ballet and opera. Prelude and Mazurka fuses two separate musical moments from the ballet Coppélia, first performed in 1870 and based on a story by E. T. A. Hoffmann (author of The Nutcracker). A lovely chorale opens the Prelude, and leads to the elegant Mazurka, a lively Polish country dance similar to the waltz with a different accent pattern.
