The first selection is the Adagio from Cinderella by Serge Prokofiev who composed the music for the ballet between 1940 and 1944, but the premiere was delayed by the war and did not occur until November 21, 1945. In the meantime, Prokofiev set about making arrangements of individual movements, including collections for piano and suites for orchestra. The Adagio was first heard in a radio broadcast from Moscow by cellist Aleksandr Stogorsky on April 19, 1944. In the ballet, this music comes from near the end of Act II, when Cinderella has arrived at the ball, and her beauty has charmed the prince. After each of them performs an individual dance, they unite for a pas de deux that celebrates their growing love, and the Adagio is the music that accompanies that first dance together.Notes by Eric Bromberger
