Flow My Tears (Lachrimae Pavan) John Dowland (1563 – 1626), arranged by William Byrd (1543 – 1623)
John Dowland was a close contemporary of Shakespeare and—like the Bard—his own life is shrouded in mythology. He styled himself 'Semper Dowland, semper dolens' (Always Dowland, always doleful) though opinions vary as to whether or not that description fitted the man himself. Certainly, it seems a neat summation of Dowland's music—no-one does melancholy with more unerring honesty. That's abundantly apparent in the Lachrimae Pavan, which Luca Buratto performs in William Byrd's keyboard arrangement. It was one of Dowland's most celebrated lute works, which he then turned into the equally famous song, Flow, my tears, fall from your springs.Luca Buratto
