Selections from Spanish Suite Joaquín Nin (1879 – 1949)

I.  Vieja Castilla
II.  Murciana

Joaquin Nin spent most of his life in Spain but was born and died in Cuba.  His Spanish Suite for cello and piano is an ode to the musical flavors he experienced throughout his life.  We will be playing two short movements called Vieja Castilla and Murciana.  The first means ‘Old Castle’ and is pastoral with a hint of pomp.  Murciana refers to the town of Murcia which is filled with young people from the universities who roam the streets at night and fill themselves with lots of wine.           Notes by Thomas Mesa and Alexandra Joan
