Ignacy Jan Paderewski was a famous Polish pianist, composer, and a successful politician. He has been highly praised as one of the greatest pianists in Poland after Chopin.

As the first and last piece among Paderewski’s five pieces in Album de Mai Op. 10, both pieces are delicate and exquisite. The opening of Au Soir, a graceful melody, repeats many times in different keys and forms throughout the whole piece with the lyrical sense of narrative.

After a brilliant Cadenza opening, a lively waltz is presented in Caprice Valse. The waltz dance and cadenza passage are performed alternately, which makes the whole piece sound free and vivid. The persistent rhythm emphasizes between the first and third beat, and the clever use of rubato and fermata brings a sense of joy to the piece.     Notes by Huiping Cai
