Johann Nepomuk Hummel was born in Presburg, Austria and was a pupil of Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart, Antonio Salieri and Johann Georg Albrechtsbergerat the same time as the young Ludwig van Beethoven, with whom he tied a good friendship. In 1804 Hummel succeeded Franz Joseph Haydn as Kapell Meister at the court of Prince Esterhazy, and later played the same role in Weimar establishing excellent relations with the poets Johann Wolfgang Goethe and Friedrich Schiller. Highly appreciated as a composer, pianist and conductor, his performances in England and Russia became famous for his virtuosity as a pianist and for his music. His musical motto was "enjoy the world while giving joy to the world". Among his students were Sigismund Thalberg and Felix Mendelssohn, and the young Liszt and Schumann were both unable (respectively for financial and health reasons) to pursue their studies with him despite their desire to do so. Hummel composed many works for solo instruments and orchestra and a large amount of chamber works. Among these, 23 compositions for flute and piano, in full music salon style with bouts of great virtuosity for both instruments. Hummel’s Op. 50 is one of his most celebrated flute compositions.
