We move from my family to our universal family. Valerie Coleman’s tone poem Fanmi Imèn, written for the 2018 National Flute Association High School Soloist Competition, reflects upon Maya Angelou’s “Human Family.” The extraordinarily gifted Coleman combines diverse musical influences to create a cohesive statement of community, as cited in the foreword to the score: “[Fanmi Imèn] draws inspiration from French flute music blending with an underlying pentatonicism found in Asian traditions, a caravan through Middle Eastern parts of the world merging with Flamenco, and an upbeat journey southward into Africa....” Notes by Timothy Hagen
