André Messager, a French composer, organist, pianist, conductor and administrator, was a major figure in the musical life of Paris and London. Although as a composer he is known chiefly for his light works, as a conductor he presented a wide range of operas, from Mozart to Richard Strauss, and he acquired a reputation as a conductor of Wagner. He was a great friend of Gabriel Fauré who as the director of the Paris Conservatoire persuaded him to write the “Solo de Concours” as a clarinet test-piece in 1899 to be used at the Paris Conservatoire. Messager was a piano and composition student of Camille Saint-Saëns and Gabriel Fauré.
