I recently came across a June 22, 1988 National Symphony Orchestra (DC) program titled "Music of the West Coast". It featured Milhaud`s "Murder of a Great Chief of State", Henry Cowell`s Piano Concerto performed by Rebecca La Brecque (who sadly died from brain tumors eight years later), and this Carlson piece. I am sure I enjoyed this piece then as I did this rendition now. It seems to be written as to stop time for a while. I especially loved the timpani intro. It`s been fun to relive that concert, part of the Kennedy Center`s San Francisco Festival at which I also saw the Kronos Quartet.
