Mikhail Glinka's Overture to Ruslan and Lyudmila is one of the greatest Russian showpieces ever written -- throughout the piece, Glinka weaves in multiple insidiously enjoyable melodies to form a splendid composition. The Leningrad Philharmonic Orchestra performs this masterpiece without an error, and Evgeny Mravinsky's conduction is fluent and without flaw. However, I sadly cannot say this recording was perfect -- the recording has a certain muffled quality to it, which lots of old recordings had. But nonetheless, even with this minor blemish, this was a thoroughly gratifying recording, one that classical music enthusiasts definitely shouldn't miss out on.
