Domenico Scarlatti, born in Naples in 1685, is most well-known for his output of over 500 keyboard sonatas. Unlike most of these sonatas, which were composed in pairs (a lyrical sonata followed by a virtuosic one), the D major group forms a rare triptych of three sonatas. The first one, K. 490, is expressive and almost whimsical in its harmonic modulations and rhythmic undulations. It is followed by K. 491, a lively and bright work in 3/4 time, begun in a heraldic manner by a series of trills. The final sonata of the group, K. 492, is sprightly, light, and filled with energetic and virtuosic scales. All three sonatas show the considerable influence of guitar music, particularly in the flamenco style.       Mei-Ting Sun
