Frederic Chopin (1810-1849) composed the Nocturne Op. 9, No. 2 when he was about twenty years old. The piece opens with a heartfelt melody which is heard again several times. With each repetition, it is increasingly embellished with decorative ornamentation. Cellist David Popper (1843-1914) wrote the transcription for cello and piano being performed on today’s program. This was a regularly performed showpiece by several famous early 20th cellists including Pablo Casals and Emanuel Feuermann.Benjamin Lash
