Luigi Boccherini (1743-1805) was a cellist and composer who was born in Italy and worked in Vienna, Paris and Madrid. He was a prolific composer and a large portion of his music was dedicated to raising the technical standards of cello performance and promoting the prominence of the cello as a solo instrument. He composed over thirty cello sonatas and in 1770 published a set of six sonatas. Sonata No. 6 is quite characteristic of Boccherini’s other works, including both moments of virtuosity and lyricism. The Adagio movement is characterized by elegance and refinement, while the Allegro movement presents a contrast in energy and virtuosity.Benjamin Lash
