This large choral work is a setting of Psalm 116 in Russian. This is numbered as Psalm 114 in the Russian bible and Latin Vulgate. The voices are doubled with stringed instruments called viols; these instruments are the predecessors of the violin, viola, cello, and bass. Although the voices have very smooth, independent lines, the resulting harmonies are colorful.
