Grave; Allegro; Allegro (tempo di
Gavotta); Largo; Allegro
Giuseppe Valentini (1681-1753) was a prominent figure in Italian Baroque
music. Not only was he a composer, but also a virtuoso violinist. His melodic
style and structural development of the solo sonata—an anachronistic
title commonly referencing one melodic instrument and a basso continuo—inspired
and challenged his contemporaries.
His Sonata in E Major (1714) is the tenth of his XII Sonate a
allettamenti per camera, Op. 8. A five movement work schematically outlined
slow-fast-fast-slow-fast, it is a composition of notable harmonic and
structural ingenuity. The melodic lyricism of the opening Grave movement
segues into an energetic, contrasting second movement, Allegro. The
third movement is a stately Gavotte, a stylized dance in binary form,
followed by a plaintive, slow Largo movement that is introspective and
elegant. The concluding final movement is a spirited Allegro full of
virtuosic gestures. Set in a fast triple meter, this dance-like movement
concludes with a brilliant cello cadenza.
