Caprice #36 Luigi Legnani
Luigi Legnani (1790-1877) is best known for performing duets with the great violinist Paganini, who himself was an outstanding guitarist. In fact, Paganini wrote his Grand Sonata for guitar and violin with a simplified violin part so that he and Legnani could temporarily switch instruments during a performance. Legnani's virtuosity on the guitar almost rivaled that of Paganini on the violin, and Legnani's most famous pieces, the 36 Capricci for guitar are a response to his friend's 24 Capricci for the violin. Presented today are three of the most virtuosic from the collection of 36: numbers 36, 28, and 7. Beau Benson
