Johann
Kasper Mertz is arguably the greatest guitarist/composer of the generation
following that of Fernando Sor. His
music is stylistically in line with that of his romantic contemporaries. Like many of Chopin's piano works, Elegie is clearly conceived with the bel canto operatic style in mind - a
style with which Mertz was very familiar.
Arrangements of popular arias and virtuoso fantasies on operatic themes
were the cornerstone of his concert repertoire. Elegie, however, is one
of his many works drawing solely on original material. Beau Benson
