Picchi's Toccata is a grand, declamatory work which combines runs, rhythmical passages and seemingly improvised sections. The instrument used here, designed by Rejean Poirier, was inspired by several different 16th-century models, and especially by Bononiensis. Builder Yves Beaupré collaborated in its construction. This is the type of instrument that literaly invaded Europe, particularly in the 16th century. It is tuned in standard meantone temperament, all major thirds being pure.
