Manuel
Blasco de Nebra was born in Seville in 1750 and died there in 1784. He came
from a musical family and his father, the organist José Blasco de Nebra, was
his first teacher. Manuel soon achieved renown for his amazing sight-reading
abilities and for his remarkably expressive performances on the harpsichord,
organ and pianoforte. During his short life, he composed about 170 works, 30 of which survive-all
for keyboard.
Blasco
de Nebra's sonatas share a common structure; each has two contrasting
movements. The gentle opening Adagios offer melodies that are highly
elaborate and ornamented where the music at times seems suspended. By contrast,
the fast second movements are lighthearted in nature, with many technical
challenges. There are frequent reminders in these fast movements of guitar
effects, the music seems to emulate the
agility and vigor of plucked strings and the shifting harmonies achieved in
Spanish guitar music. Antonio Pastor Otero
