Variations in c minor, WoO. 80 Ludwig van Beethoven
Beethoven loved the variation form and wrote twenty
different pieces of that type. He was known to be able to sit at the piano for
hours improvising on famous melodies such as Mozart's "Se vuol balare" from Marriage of Figaro.
In
1806, he composed these thirty-two variations on his own theme, a tune only
seventeen notes long. Each variation,
except the final one, is precisely eight measures long. Often the theme is made
evident in the right hand; sometimes it is only hinted at while masked in a
plethora of notes. Angela Jia Kim
