Spanish Rhapsody, S.254, R.90, was composed in 1863 and is very suggestive of traditional Spanish music, being inspired by Liszt's 1845 tour in Spain and Portugal. He chose the ancient theme La Folia for an introductory passacaglia, a theme which originated as a dance in sixteenth century Portugal. The other popular dance melody in the work is the Jota Aragonesa. Both melodies develop through some variations until they start to interact with a clear increasing of the tension and the difficulty.Jie Yuan
