Sonata in f minor, Longo 118, K. 466 Domenico Scarlatti
Domenico Scarlatti was born in Naples in 1685. A composer of more than 600 sonati, he is one
of the chief exponents of Baroque keyboard music. His music however, was not so widely known
during his lifetime, the vast majority being published posthumously. This prodigious output of short sonati was
created for use as teaching pieces for the musically gifted Maria Barbara, the
Portuguese princess later to become the queen of Spain. Scarlatti's keyboard
works have earned their way into today's concert repertoire through being championed
by, most notably, Vladimir Horowitz. This
small f minor sonata is one of Horowitz's more celebrated choices. Peter Maxwell Land
