Etude in c-sharp minor, Op. 2, No. 1          Alexander Scriabin

Scriabin was considered an eccentric during his youth, and later became obsessed with synesthesia, associating pitches with specific colors.  He had an affinity for Chopin, and thus his early style blended lush Chopinesque harmonies with Lisztian virtuosity.  The Etude in c-sharp minor was Scriabin's first masterpiece that was composed at just fourteen years of age.  It is a brief, passionate work, with undercurrents of anxious melancholy...   Soyeon Lee
