Fantasy in b minor, Op. 28                   Alexander Scriabin

Scriabin was considered an eccentric during his youth, and later became obsessed with synesthesia, associating pitches with specific colors.  He had an affinity for Chopin, and thus his early style blended lush Chopinesque harmonies with Lisztian virtuosity...

The b minor Fantasy uses the piano in all its dynamic range.  Here is Scriabin already exploring the colors of the instrument.  After the opening march-like theme, the second theme soars with a heart-breaking melody, which culminates in the restatement of the lyrical second theme in this passionate and tempestuous work.     Soyeon Lee
