Bela
Bartok's First Rhapsody was written in 1928 when the Hungarian composer,
approaching 50, adhered to the growing demand for virtuoso pieces and more
accessible music. Like much of his
music, "Lassu" is based on a folk dance.
In this short piece, Bartok combines his art as a Western composer, his
interest in folk culture and his ability to musically incarnate a national spirit. Nurit Pacht
