One of the most distinguished and best-loved
violinists of all time, Vienna-born Fritz Kreisler studied at the
conservatories of Vienna and Paris and made his first appearance in the United States in 1889. His subsequent international career,
interrupted briefly by medical studies and a period of military service,
consolidated his position as a leading virtuoso. Kreisler enjoyed enormous popularity, which
was reinforced by his own numerous short tuneful compositions for the instrument
of which he was such a master. Kreisler's
compositions and transcriptions, including Caprice Viennois, Tambourin
Chinois, and Liebesleid, have become a standard part of the violin
repertoire. The Recitative and Scherzo
is written for solo violin. Janet Sung
