The Austrian violinist and composer, Fritz Kreisler is regarded as one of the greatest violin masters that ever lived. His sweet sound and musical expression are very individual and easily recognizable as his own. One of his teachers was the Belgian, Joseph Massart, who also taught Henryk Wieniawski, even though Kreisler dates much later than Wieniawski. At the turn of the century he performed as a soloist with the Berlin Philharmonic and then in the US. Both events mark the beginning of his significant career. His Three Old Viennese Dances, Liebesfreud (Love's Joy), Liebesleid (Love's Sorrow) and Schön Rosmarin (Lovely Rosemary), are short salon pieces performed either as a set or separately. Light in character and of simple harmonies, they were often performed by the composer himself as encores. Kinga Augustyn
