The distinguished Royal Philharmonic is here reduced to a collection of plaster statues regurgitating all previous Elgar errors on a continuous loop. Andrew Litton appears to hate Victorian England, with which this piece is inextricably linked, rather like someone who wants to make the Diamond Jubilee cubist. The Friburg Youth Orchestra and the Warsaw Philharmonic versions are far preferable.
