In 1899, Elgar composed Chanson de Matin, a piece written as a companion to his Chanson de Nuit.  Like Chanson de Nuit, the piece was published with a French title to attract sales among those interested in French influences. The two tone poems mark an important contribution to the genre of “light music.”  Much brighter than its companion, the melody of Chanson de Matin makes appropriate use of high pitches for a “song of the morning.”  The wistful style emerges from the use of syncopation and ornamentation while the chromatic passages and inner rhythms add levity to the melody.  The highly expressive nature of this piece requires the performer to blend exquisitely controlled technique with an ability to maintain continuity of melody within the demands of sweeping intervals.       Joanna Marie Frankel
