Prayers of Steel by Jonathan Newman (b.1972) I. Limited II. Foxtrot III. Prayers of Steel IV. City of Big Shoulders
Prayers of Steel takes inspiration from different aspects of Chicago as filtered through the Chicago Poems of Carl Sandburg. The first movement, Limited, describes a train trip away from the city and the dark empty scenery from the train leads to music that is both oppressive and energetic. Movement 2, Foxtrot, is the composer’s own insertion as he imagined wandering around Sandburg’s Chicago hearing the “lifted head singing” of the city through its dance orchestras.Movement 3 is a hymn like setting of the text of Prayers of Steel. The 4th movement captures the energy of the City of Big Shoulders. The Gaudete Brass Quintet
