Johann Paul von Westhoff was a violinist (and language teacher) in the Saxon court in Dresden in the 2nd half of the 17th century. He was one of the favorite musicians of Louis XIV in Paris where he composed this suite, published in 1683. Westhoff’s six surviving partitas are historically important works, for they are the earliest known pieces composed for solo violin, without accompaniment, and it is generally thought that they were the inspiration for J. S. Bach's sonatas and partitas for solo violin.Alexi Kenney
