Sulkhan Tsintsadze was a foremost Georgian composer and a cellist. He wrote several operas, ballets, symphonies, concertos and string quartets. Tsintsadze was chairman of the Georgian Composers Union and a rector of the Tbilisi State Conservatoire.He was acknowledged for his contribution to Georgian music by receiving awards such as “People’s Artist of Georgia” and “People’s Artist of USSR”. Tsintsadze effectively integrated western compositional techniques with his native Georgian folk music. One can hear clear examples of this technique in these two pieces.
Melodia conveys the lyricism of Georgian singing while Khorumi is a war-like dance set in five beat meter. The original Khorumi originates from the Adjara, western Georgia. It might date back to the period of the heroic wars against the conquering armies of the Turks, Persians, Mongols, and others.
