I. Andante II. Andantino III. Preghiera. Andantino non troppo lento
A prominent Polish composer and virtuoso violinist Karol Józef Lipiński, was known as the only serious rival to Paganini. Interestingly, in 1810 he became the first violin and two years later the conductor of the opera orchestra in Lwów where Elsner held the same position earlier. Lipinski often performed concerts together with the Polish pianist and composer Maria Agata Szymanowska (one of Elsner’s most prominent students). Souvenir de la Mer Baltique from Lipinski’s Divertisments pour le Violon was published in 1836 by Breitkopf & Hartel in Leipzig. Like his other instrumental works, especially the ones where violin play the leading role, the piece is characterized by a wonderful melodic invention and dance-like quality at times.Notes by Tatiana Chulochnikova
