In a letter from October 1777, Mozart wrote to his father, "I here send my sister six Duos for keyboard and violin by Schuster. I have played them often here. They are not bad. If I stay [in Salzburg], I shall also write six in this style…" Although Mozart had already begun to develop a mature approach to writing for violin and piano, musicologists believe that Schuster's skillful alternation of the two instruments inspired the writing of K. 303. Mozart's use of alternating tempi (Adagio and Molto allegro), in the first movement, makes this lesser-known sonata quite distinctive; the work is brought to a close with a playful and elegant Tempo di Menuetto.
