This virtuosic violin showpiece is actually derived from the last of Saint-Saëns’s Six Études for solo piano titled Étude en forme de valse (Etude in the form of a waltz) written in 1877. Ysaÿe later took this etude and arranged a caprice for violin and piano around its main themes and structure. The work is very playful and flashy in character, complete with intricate technical demands and a playful motif that can be heard throughout the piece.Laura Park
