Poème élégiaque for Violin and  Piano in d minor        Eugène-Auguste Ysaÿe

Eugène Ysaÿe was one of the most important violinists of the beginning of the 20th century.  While living in Paris, he formed close ties with Fauré, Saint-Saëns, Chausson, Vincent d'Indy, Franck, and Debussy and was honored by a number of dedications, among them the Sonata by Franck, the Poème and Concerto by Chausson and Debussy's string quartet.

The Poème Elégiaque, was a new musical form, original in concept, with a tragic but ultimately inspiring nature. The scordatura (the G string lowered by a key) gives the Dirge a poignant and heart-rending timbre which fills the listener with intense emotion.   Kai Gleusteen
