Gaspar Cassado, a Spanish cellist and composer, was awarded a scholarship at the age of nine to move from Barcelona to Paris to study cello with Pablo Casals. During his time in Paris, he also studied composition with Ravel and Manuel de Falla.Cassado gained fame equally as a cellist and composer, performing internationally as one of the greatest cellists of his time. His compositions played most often are Requiebros, Suite for Solo Cello, and Danse du Diable Vert. The ‘Dance of the Green Devil’, for violin or cello and piano, flirtatiously showcases the virtuosity of the cello by using tricky bow techniques while stretching the length of the entire fingerboard.
