Beethoven at three points in his life composed sonatas for the cello; two come from his early period, in the opus 5 sonatas, one comes from his middle period, in the opus 69, and the last two both come from the opus 102. The first of these two sonatas, in C Major, is the shortest of the five sonatas. A two bar phrase with solo cello opens the work, which lays the ground work for the rest of sonata. Almost every other note in the piece can be related to one of the three motives that begin the sonata which exudes the optimistic ethereal quality so present in Beethoven's late period.         Matthew Allen
