Nocturne means “night piece,” and when we speak of it as a musical form we automatically think of the Chopin nocturnes, for it was Chopin whose dreamy night pieces, which he composed throughout his creative span, captivated Europe.Three Nocturnes, Op. 9, composed in 1835 and published two years later, represent Chopin's refinement of the ideas developed by John Field, inspired also by the popular vocal style known as serenade. The Third Nocturne in B is sinuous and suggestive, with a stormy middle section marked agitato. The return of the A section at the end of the piece has a floating quality which seems to go beyond bar lines. Jingjing Wang
