Robert Nicholas-Charles Bochsa is best known for his prolific and often innovative compositions for the harp, which took full advantage of the technical possibilities of the newly designed double-action pedal harp of 1810. His career as a composer and harpist took him around the world, where his reputation for forgeries and other transgressions followed him. His second Rondoletto, composed in 1828, is based on an aria from the finale of Rossini’s La Cenerentola, “Non più mesta accanto al fuoco.” Typical of many works for harp and treble instrument from the first third of the 19th century, the piece features the harp as the predominate solo instrument, while the flute plays the role of accompanist, adding harmonic color and rhythmic interest, while occasionally doubling the harp melody.Ellen Huntington
