I. Andante con moto

III. Allegro molto
Adrian Schaposhnikov (1888 – 1967), a native of Saint Petersburg and a student of Alexander Glazunov, was a People’s Artist of the Turkmen Soviet Socialist Republic, composing works ranging from opera and ballet to songs and piano works. He is best known for his Sonata for Flute and Harp (1926). The piece is written in a traditional form and showcases the virtuosic and tender qualities of both instruments. The first movement opens with a peaceful melody paired with ornate flourishes, and then continues with an Allegro section full of expansive melodies. The second movement is a gentle, elegant minuet, and the third movement, in a rhythmic 6/8, contains rich harmonies and folk elements, before concluding with the material from the beginning of the sonata.
