1849 was an extraordinarily prolific year for Robert Schumann, one in which he completed nearly 100 hundred vocal works in addition to four of his most beloved instrumental duo works: Adagio und Allegro Op. 70, Fantasiestücke Op. 73, Fünf Stücke im Volkston Op. 102, and Drei Romanzen Op. 94. Composed as Christmas gifts to his wife Clara Schumann, the Drei Romanzen express a marital love full of endearment and tenderness, but perhaps most potently, vulnerability. Tragically, this love was cut short by Robert’s mental illness, riddling the following years and leading him towards a suicide attempt, self-admittance to an insane asylum, and eventual death. In these three inward-looking romances, we are given an honest glimpse into the mind of the composer: adoring at times, deeply troubled at others.Gabriel Martins
