Although Ernest Chausson is now mainly known for his work Poeme for violin and orchestra, in his
prime he was considered to be one of France´s famous composers. His colleagues
included Debussy, d´Indy, Pierné, Dukas, and Fauré. He was a student of opera
composer Massenet and wrote a number of operas (Helené or Le roi Arthus) in
the impressionistic style with hints of Wagner´s harmonies. It is fortunate for
the clarinet repertoire that before his untimely death in a bicycle accident at
the age of 44, the Andante et Allegro was commisioned by the Paris
