To please his well-to-do family, Ernest Chausson (1855 - 1899) trained in the law and worked as a lawyer in the French court of appeals. At 25 he entered the composition class of Jules Massenet at the Paris Conservatory, where he later studied under Cesar Franck. The operas of Wagner were also a great influence on Chausson's later compositions. The Andante and Allegro for Clarinet and Piano was written in 1881 and exhibits an elegant, flowing melody inspired by his study with Massenet. Alexander Bedenko
