Suite in Old Style Alfred Schnittke (arr. by Kalmen Opperman)
Alfred Schnittke (1934 - 1998) began his musical education in Vienna where his Russian father was posted as a journalist and translator. Later when the family returned to Russia, Schnittke continued his training at the Moscow Conservatory, completing graduate work in composition in 1961. He wrote a significant number of scores for television and film, which led to larger-scale commissions for the Liverpool Philharmonic, and the Royal Stockholm Philharmonic.
The Suite in Old Style came out of a film score composed in 1972, originally written for violin with piano or harpsichord. As its name implies, it emulates earlier musical styles. The five movements are a Pastorale, Ballet, Minuet, Fugue, and Pantomime. Alexander Bedenko
