1937Paul Hindemithfled Nazi Germany to Switzerland and later
to the United States. In the same year, hisFlute Sonata was premiered by Georges Barrere. Hindemith reported that it
"made a very good impression and the large audience received it warmly". The
piece is seen in context of Hindemith's preoccupation with the facist
threat. The first movement is in
neoclassical style - traditional sonata form with more modern harmonies and
chromatic shifts. In the second movement, the piano's mood and rhythm are like
an advancing army. The third movement is a bubbly romp that ends with a march
which sounds like a heroic, patriotic tune. Jennifer Bartel
