The Dead Moth Tango from Three Dances Portraits William
Bolcom
The Dead Moth Tango from 1991 is based on the Argentine
tango rhythm, indicated at the beginning by the terms "Inflexible, Tango Funèbre." About the title Bolcom writes "The Dead Moth Tango got its title from a
moth I killed inadvertently." According
to Bolcom this is not a programmatic piece, however the music seems to well represent
a few moments in the short and unfortunate life of the moth before it is
smashed on manuscript paper. Oscar Macchioni
